  • As a part of Swing Operation, the AIT Phase-III arrival hall was commissioned as Domestic Arrival w.e.f 07.04.2009. Once the Customs Department is ready with their baggage scanning machines, this will be used for International arrival also on swing basis.
  • Bus Lounge for the International arrival passengers was commissioned on 08.05.2009. Subsequently, the same lounge was started utilizing w.e.f 08.06.2009 for the benefit of Int'l Departure passenger too.
  • Completion of In-line baggage scanning system at the cost of Rs.11 Crores at International Departure. The system will be commissioned after completion of training for Security Personnel.
  • The state-of-art travellator i.e. auto walker is being installed at a cost of Rs.4.18 Crores with a length of 300 mtrs. for the first time in Indian Airports and was commissioned on
  • Additional area has been created in the ground floor security hold area of domestic terminal for the convenience of the passengers.
  • Free pick up and drop services have been arranged through car rental services from auto drop points.
  • Chennai Airport has entered into mutual aid agreement with 13 Nursing Homes / Hospitals for Disaster Management / Aircraft exigencies.
  • Maintaining UNITY POWER FACTOR, thereby an incentive of Rs. 62.77 Lacs received from TNEB. during the Year 2008-2009. During 2009-10 (up to Oct), a sum of Rs. 44.71 Lacs received from TNEB as incentive for maintaining the Unity Power Factor.
  • The computer system at Air Cargo Terminal has been upgraded from 8i to 10g Oracle database system which is facilitating the Web based EDI system to work very efficiently.

EXPANSION/ MODERNISATION PLAN (MEGA PROJECT):

Though various modification/expansion works have been undertaken both at terminals as well as apron area, since the existing passenger terminals and cargo complex have already saturated and in order to meet the growing demand, the following modernization/expansion programme have already been initiated.

  • Extension of secondary Runway:

    In order to augment the Apron/Runway capacity to cope with increase in aircraft movements, proposal for parallel runway had been initiated. Accordingly, the State Government was approached for land acquisition of 1069.99 acres on the northern side of Adyar River. Out of which, initially, the State Government has handed over 126.59 acres of land.

    The existing length of runway 12-30 is 2085 Mtrs. After extension of the runway, the total length will be 3117 mtrs. To extend this runway length, a bridge is being constructed across the Adyar River for a length of 200M and width of 447.5 M. This is the first such major bridge across the river in India designed to handle A-380 aircraft and the work is nearing completion.

  • Construction of Phase - II Domestic Terminal:

    New Domestic Terminal is being constructed adjacent to the existing terminal on the eastern side. The new terminal will have an area of 67,700 Sqm with all modern facilities.

  • Expansion of International Terminal:

    The International Terminal is being extended on the western side of the existing terminal. The new expansion will have an area of 59,300 Sqm.

    Both the terminals will have world class steel & glass as its structure with state-of-the-art modern passenger facilities/amenities of international standards such as Passenger Boarding Bridges with Visual Docking System, Central Air-conditioning, Escalators/Lifts, Inline Baggage Conveyor System (both at arrival & departure), CCTV. Flight Information Display System, Multi-level car park etc

  • Construction of Cargo Complex - Phase - III:

    At present, the import cargo is being handled from various sheds made on emergency basis. In order to bring all the import activities under one roof and to meet the growing demand, Construction of Integrated Cargo Complex (Phase-III) is under progress with an area of 26,000 Sqm. The new complex will have Vertical Storage Space, Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) as special features.
