Functions of Department of Integrated Planning Cell

Directorate of Integrated Planning was created with sole objective of modernization of air traffic service systems (salient points given below) at Mumbai and Delhi airports with a project cost of Rs. 423.89 Crores.

  • Automation giving transfer of flight controls and data, aircraft estimates for various phases of aircraft movement, using flight data processing and radar data processing systems.
  • Enhance safety by providing traffic alerts.
  • Better traffic management using uni-directional routing.
  • Reduction in pilot controller communication by using radar display data.
  • Meteorological data processing.
  • Continuous updating with a view on future air navigation systems.
  • Reduction in flying time and fuel consumption.

The system at Delhi Airport was taken over from the contractor M/s Raytheon on 26 March, 1998 whereas the Mumbai system was taken over on 18 June, 1999.

The system at Delhi is running smoothly and proved to be reliable. (Warranty period over on 26 March, 2000).

With this introduction of automation the delays in the landing and take - off of the aircraft have significantly been reduced and traffic handling capacity has gone threefold to 35-40 landings/take-offs per hour.

The Directorate has acquired a rich experience in airport project handling and now looks forward in undertaking turn-key projects of such nature.
